Balanced Feeding with Total Mixed Rations for Dairy Cows

Feeding dairy cows is about more than filling the bunk. Every ration affects herd health, reproduction, and milk in the tank. A total mixed ration (TMR) blends forages, grains, proteins, vitamins, and minerals into one uniform mix. With TMR, every bite delivers balanced nutrition, leaving cows less chance to sort.

Why Farmers Use TMR

TMR feeding helps keep the rumen stable, lowers digestive upsets, and improves feed efficiency. Rumen microbes get a steady supply of nutrients, which boosts fermentation and milk output. Well-managed herds often see one to two and a half kilograms more milk per cow each day.

For farmers, a TMR mixer also means more control. With all ingredients measured and blended, feeding becomes faster, more consistent, and less labor-intensive.

Challenges to Consider

TMR feeding is not without limits. All cows in a group eat the same ration, so grouping by stage of lactation and body size is essential. If cows are too mixed, some will be overfed while others fall short.

The equipment is also an investment. Mixers are costly and may need extra tools to handle long hay or straw. Still, many producers find the gains in efficiency outweigh the challenges.

Grouping for Better Results

Grouping cows makes TMR more effective. Pre-fresh cows, fresh cows, high producers, and late-lactation animals all have different needs. First-lactation heifers also benefit from their own group. Having at least three lactating groups, plus dry cows, allows rations to match production stage more closely. This keeps feed costs in line and helps cows perform to their potential.

Managing TMR Day to Day

Daily management keeps a TMR program on track. Test forage dry matter often, since moisture levels can change quickly and throw rations off balance. Push up feed several times a day so cows always have access to fresh feed.

Feeding twice daily in hot weather helps maintain intake. Keep an eye out for sorting—if the mix is too dry, cows may pick through for grain. A TMR at 50–55% dry matter, mixed properly, reduces this risk.

On-Farm Impact

A TMR is more than a feeding method. It delivers balanced nutrition in every bite, supports reproduction, and helps sustain milk production. With the right grouping strategy and steady management, it turns consistency at the bunk into results in the bulk tank.
