Titled “Faster and further: Canada’s Methane Strategy”, this document is a follow-up to Canada’s 2021 Global Methane Pledge. The following is Dairy Farmers of Canada’s reaction.

The federal government today unveiled a new methane strategy which describes the progress made to date by various sectors on emissions reduction, and outlines how government and industry can continue to work together to drive further progress on our mutual sustainability objectives.

The report noted that Canadian dairy farmers are already global leaders in sustainability. Our sector has already announced a target of net-zero emissions at the farm level by 2050, a goal which will build upon the many decades of conservation efforts that our dairy farmers have already made.

While this is an ambitious goal, DFC is confident that it is attainable as farmers continue to adopt new technologies and best management practices in a variety of areas including livestock management, feed production, manure management, and energy use.

In this new strategy, the government also acknowledged its own role in the equation by noting that significant investments will be required and farmers will need support from government to help them move forward. Continued collaboration will be essential to progress further on sustainability.

DFC will continue to engage with the government to ensure that dairy farmers perspectives are well-understood and reflected in future sustainability initiatives.
