Six workers died in an accident at a Weld County dairy farm on Wednesday. Authorities confirmed the victims were recovered from a confined space at Prospect Valley Dairy near Keenesburg, about 40 miles northeast of Denver.
Authorities Investigating Cause of Death
Emergency crews from the Southeast Weld Fire Protection District responded Wednesday evening to what was described as a “confined space rescue.” Firefighters entered the area with safety precautions and recovered six men who had died at the scene.
Three others were taken to UCHealth hospital in Greeley for treatment and later released.
The Weld County Coroner’s Office said autopsies are being conducted to determine the cause and manner of death. The victims’ names are being withheld until families are notified. Officials have not provided further details about the circumstances of the accident.
The Weld County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that no criminal activity is suspected. The U.S. Department of Labor said the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has opened an investigation and will release findings once the review is complete.
Farm Identified as Prospect Valley Dairy
Public records show the farm is owned by Prospect Valley Dairy LLC, which lists a business address in Bakersfield, California. The operation is a member of Dairy Farmers of America (DFA), a national milk marketing cooperative.
In a statement, DFA expressed sympathy for the victims’ families and coworkers. “We are deeply saddened by this incident, and our thoughts and most sincere condolences go out to the friends and families of the deceased,” the organization said.
OSHA to Release Findings in Ongoing Review
Officials emphasized that the investigation is in its early stages. Autopsies are underway, and OSHA is reviewing the incident to determine compliance with workplace safety standards.
The names of the deceased have not yet been released. Authorities and industry representatives have extended condolences to the families, coworkers, and community affected by the tragedy.
