The Ontario government is investing more than $5.4 million in 28 agri-food research projects through the Ontario Agri-Food Innovation Alliance, aiming to strengthen the province’s $51 billion agri-food sector by accelerating the commercialization of new technologies.
This latest funding is part of a six-year, $40 million commitment to support tier 1 research through the Alliance—a partnership between the province, the University of Guelph, and Agricultural Research and Innovation Ontario (ARIO). The initiative helps farmers and agri-businesses remain competitive amid economic challenges, including global trade uncertainties.
Projects receiving funding this year include:
-
Development of a battery-powered, AI-driven robot to combat pests in soybean fields
-
Use of economic modeling to help producers respond to market shifts and explore trade opportunities
-
Creation of advanced hive technologies to protect honeybee colonies from Varroa mites
-
New feeding and management strategies to lower production costs in pig farming
The research supports the province’s Grow Ontario Strategy, which focuses on increasing innovation, enhancing food production, and bolstering economic resilience in rural communities.
Ontario’s agri-food research network includes 14 properties across 5,600 acres and over 220 specialized facilities, enabling applied research with real-world impact.
