New Program Helps P.E.I. Horticulture Growers Adapt to Climate Change and Expand Markets

387

A new program under the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership (Sustainable CAP) is now available to support horticulture producers in Prince Edward Island (P.E.I.). The Horticulture Diversification Program aims to help Island growers diversify crops, adopt climate-resilient practices, and boost the supply of locally grown food across Canada.

The program targets key areas of growth, including greenhouse and controlled environment agriculture (CEA) expansion, improved crop storage, and increased operational efficiency. It also supports the use of new technologies to enhance productivity and reduce post-harvest losses.

Funding is available through four main activity streams:

  • Season Extension and CEA Expansion

  • Efficiency and Productivity Improvements

  • Post-Harvest Cooling, Freezing, and Storage Upgrades

  • Agronomic Support

The initiative reflects ongoing efforts to strengthen food security and support local producers amid changing climate conditions. By investing in new infrastructure and technologies, P.E.I. farmers can increase yields, extend the marketing season, and pursue new opportunities in domestic and export markets.

The Horticulture Diversification Program is part of a broader suite of Sustainable CAP initiatives available in the province. Sustainable CAP is a five-year, $3.5 billion investment jointly funded by federal, provincial, and territorial governments to enhance the competitiveness, resilience, and innovation of Canada’s agri-food sector.

This includes $1 billion in federally led programs and $2.5 billion in cost-shared funding, with 60% from the federal government and 40% from provincial and territorial governments.
