When Dave and Ann Buck began building their dairy operation in Goodhue, Minnesota, they started with 70 cows and a clear vision for the future.

More than three decades later, that vision has grown into Bucks Unlimited — a multi-family enterprise milking about 1,400 cows. The farm now includes manure management services, custom chopping and crossbred beef production.

The couple purchased the farm in 1991, although Dave had farmed alongside his family long before that. Over time, they expanded steadily while adapting to industry change. They focused on building a business that could support the next generation.

Today, their sons, D.J. and Chris, lead much of the daily management. The transition reflects years of planning and a commitment to long-term sustainability.

For the Bucks, growth has never been measured by herd size alone.

Rooted in Community

Both Dave and Ann have remained deeply involved in their community.

Ann served 12 years on the local school board. Dave dedicated 12 years to board service with the Minnesota Milk Producers Association, including four years as board president. The family also participates each year in Minnesota’s Breakfast on the Farm event, helping consumers better understand modern dairy production.

They view dairy farming as more than a business. It is also a responsibility to their neighbours and the broader agricultural community.

Recognized for Leadership

This year, Minnesota Milk named Dave and Ann its 2025 Producer of the Year. The award recognizes dairy farmers who demonstrate leadership in agriculture and active community involvement.

“There are many excellent dairy farmers in the state of Minnesota, so this award means a lot,” Dave said. “We’re truly honored and humbled to accept this award.”

The association will present the award during its Annual Meeting in St. Paul later this month.

For the Bucks, the recognition reflects decades of steady growth, thoughtful transition planning and continued commitment to dairy farming.
