Dairy cull cow prices eased across Québec this week as lighter-weight animals continued to drag provincial averages. Heavier cows held value better, while calf markets stayed active with firm prices for Holstein males and solid demand for quality crossbreds.

Cull Market Trends

The provincial dairy-type average slipped to $1.52/lb live, down $0.02 week-over-week.

  • < 1100 lb: $1.40/lb (–$0.03)

  • 1100–1500 lb: $1.45/lb (–$0.02)

  • > 1500 lb: $1.62/lb (–$0.01)

Regional averages ranged from $1.45/lb at St-Isidore to $1.58/lb at St-Hyacinthe, where volume led the province at 754 head. Heavier dairy cows continued to outperform lighter, thinner animals that met softer demand.

The U.S. reference market in Pennsylvania rose to $1.85/lb (CAD eq.), up $0.11, offering potential support to eastern Canadian values later in November.

Calf Market Overview

Auction volumes climbed to 3,642 head, with the provincial average at $15.80/lb (–$0.15).

  • Holstein good males 90–120 lb: $13.42 (+$0.55)

  • Holstein good males 120–140 lb: $12.10 (+$0.30)

  • Average Holstein males: $11.01 (+$0.95)

  • Crossbred male 90–120 lb: $20.23 (–$0.09)

  • Crossbred female 90–120 lb: $16.54 (–$0.04)

Holstein calves showed renewed strength, particularly in the lighter weight classes. Buyers continued to pay premiums for clean, healthy calves with strong starts, while large supplies created slight pressure on mid-range prices.

Producer Notes

Producers marketing cull cows should continue to sort by weight and body condition—heavier, well-fleshed animals remain in highest demand. Calf sellers can expect steady interest for vigorous Holsteins under 140 lb and quality dairy-beef crosses meeting export specs.
