Livestock handling training for veterinary students

Students interested in animal health and veterinary careers will have a new training option in Western Canada beginning in 2026.

Lethbridge Polytechnic has announced the launch of a Pre-Veterinary Medicine diploma, with applications now open for the fall 2026 intake. The two-year program is designed to provide a strong foundation in the sciences required for further study in veterinary medicine and related fields.

Focus on foundational science and animal health

The diploma will cover core subject areas including:

  • Animal genetics
  • Biochemistry
  • Anatomy and physiology
  • Nutrition

Together, these courses aim to build the academic background needed for students considering veterinary school, while also supporting entry into a range of animal science careers.

The program builds on the polytechnic’s existing animal science and laboratory infrastructure, with a focus on hands-on learning alongside classroom instruction.

Pathways beyond the diploma

A key component of the program is its transfer pathway to the University of Calgary’s Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. Students who complete the diploma will meet the 10-course requirement needed to apply to the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) program.

In addition, graduates will have several options depending on their career goals. These include:

  • Continuing into Lethbridge Polytechnic’s Bachelor of Agriculture Sciences post-diploma degree
  • Pursuing further professional studies
  • Entering the workforce in roles such as laboratory assistant, livestock technician, animal research support or nutrition consulting

Supporting workforce development in animal health

Programs like this may help address ongoing demand for skilled professionals across the livestock and animal health sectors.

For producers, access to well-trained graduates—whether in veterinary medicine, nutrition or on-farm technical roles—continues to play an important role in supporting herd health and day-to-day management.
