Immigration Raid at New Mexico Dairy Farm Sparks Community Outcry

Eleven undocumented workers were arrested on June 4 during a federal immigration raid at Outlook Dairy Farms near Lovington, New Mexico. According to the Department of Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), those taken into custody were accused of fraudulently using visas and permits to obtain employment, with nine of them previously barred from entering the U.S.

The raid has drawn sharp criticism from immigrant rights organizations and local advocates, who say it has intensified fear within southeastern New Mexico’s immigrant communities. Somos Un Pueblo Unido, a statewide advocacy group, condemned the enforcement action, stating it disrupted families and eroded trust in public institutions. The group emphasized that immigrants play a vital role in industries such as dairy, oil, and gas—pillars of the state’s economy.

The owner of Outlook Dairy Farms told local media the arrested individuals had provided false paperwork. He also revealed that 24 additional workers had been terminated following a recent employment audit.

Community leaders say the fallout has left streets eerily quiet, with families afraid to leave their homes. Somos Un Pueblo Unido has responded by increasing outreach efforts, offering legal resources, and urging residents to educate themselves about their rights, regardless of immigration status.

The raid comes amid heightened national debate over immigration enforcement. U.S. Representative Gabe Vasquez criticized the federal approach, calling for reform rooted in compassion and due process.

Advocates continue to press for transparency from Immigration and Customs Enforcement and protections for all New Mexicans, regardless of documentation.
