Hilmar Cheese Company, a global leader in cheese production and whey ingredients, has officially begun operations at its new facility in Dodge City, Kansas. The grand opening was celebrated with Kansas Governor Laura Kelly, U.S. Senator Jerry Moran, and other federal, state, and local officials.

Governor Kelly highlighted the importance of Hilmar’s investment, emphasizing that it showcases Kansas’ strong workforce and infrastructure. Senator Moran praised the company for creating jobs and strengthening the state’s dairy industry through its partnerships with local dairies and the community.

Hilmar’s President and CEO, David Ahlem, expressed gratitude for the collaboration and support from state and local leaders. He explained that Dodge City was chosen for its skilled labor force, expanding agricultural industry, and excellent transportation network. The strong partnerships with local and regional stakeholders reinforced the decision to establish operations in Kansas.

The new facility produces American-style cheese in 40-pound commercial blocks for wholesale distribution, contributing to various nutritious food products. It also manufactures high-quality, innovative proteins to meet global customer demands.

Ahlem acknowledged the hard work of employees, contractors, suppliers, and dairy farm families in Southwest Kansas, recognizing their efforts in completing the facility on time and ensuring its success. He also praised the welcoming community of Dodge City and expressed excitement about the company’s future in the region.

Sustainability is a priority at the new site, which features cutting-edge technology to improve efficiency and conservation. Automated systems optimize water and energy use, while recycled water is repurposed for protein processing, equipment cleaning, and heat recovery. High-efficiency pumps and upgraded spray nozzles further reduce water consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. As part of the U.S. Dairy Stewardship Commitment, Hilmar aims for a carbon-neutral dairy industry by 2050, with the Dodge City plant playing a key role in this goal.

The facility currently employs nearly 250 people and represents an investment of over $600 million. Hilmar continues to hire, offering competitive wages, benefits, and opportunities for career growth. Beyond business operations, the company actively supports the local community through sponsorships, including Dodge City Days, and its annual scholarship program, which helps employees, milk producers, and local students pursue higher education.
