Kendra Keels has spent nearly 20 years shaping how Canadian agriculture cares for calves. This September, her leadership was recognized when she received the 2025 Carl Block Award at the Animal Health Canada Forum in Ottawa.
As Industry Development Director with Veal Farmers of Ontario (VFO), Keels has focused on both veal and dairy calves. She guided the development of the Code of Practice for the Care and Handling of Veal Cattle, pushed for higher welfare standards, and built training programs that gave producers practical tools.
Her colleagues say her work extends well beyond Ontario. “Kendra has consistently raised the bar for how producers care for animals and how the industry collaborates on welfare standards,” said Jennifer Haley, Executive Director of VFO. “Her efforts have strengthened the veal and dairy calf sectors and added real value to the broader livestock community.”
Keels also worked to make sure calf producers had a strong voice in national policy. She linked research and farm practices with policy decisions, helping the dairy sector highlight the importance of calf care within herd management.
Dr. David Renaud of the University of Guelph praised the recognition. “She embodies the qualities this award represents—leadership, commitment, and passion for animal agriculture,” he said.
The Carl Block Award honours the memory of a cattleman who dedicated his life to Canadian agriculture. Each year, the award highlights individuals who show the same level of commitment.
For Keels, the award marks both a personal achievement and a sign of progress in calf welfare. Her leadership continues to shape how dairy and veal producers care for young animals, blending science, policy, and practical management into lasting change.
