ADM has announced the opening of a new research and development center in Lausanne, Switzerland, dedicated to advancing microbiome research for pets, livestock, and aquaculture. Located at the Biopôle life sciences campus, the 1,600 square meter facility is designed to accelerate the development of science-based health and wellness solutions for animals through microbiome-targeted innovation.
The new center will focus on pre-clinical research exploring how biotics and fermentation-derived ingredients can support gut health and overall well-being in animals. ADM scientists at the facility will work on creating tailored products for both the pet care and livestock industries, responding to the growing demand for functional ingredients that promote long-term health.
This investment comes at a time when the global biotics in animal feed market is gaining momentum, with an estimated value of $5.2 billion in 2024. Microbiome health has been increasingly recognized for its role in immune response, digestion, and nutrient absorption, making it a key factor in improving animal productivity and resource efficiency.
For the pet industry, microbiome research is also gaining traction. ADM notes that 84% of pet owners across 22 countries are interested in products that may help extend their pets’ lifespans. The company is leveraging its global R&D network to study the effects of pre-, pro-, and postbiotics on companion animal wellness, building on its broader work in both human and animal nutrition.
With the opening of this dedicated facility, ADM is strengthening its commitment to science-driven innovation in animal health, aiming to deliver targeted, effective solutions that meet the evolving needs of farmers, producers, and pet owners worldwide.
